Phablets–Cynosure of all eyes?

The wind of change is inevitable and nobody can evade this. Not quite long ago, the industry was abuzz with talks–the Smartphones cannibalizing the tablets and gradually replacing the feature phone market.

Now today, we can see Phablets (with screen size of 5.0”-6.9”) becoming the cynosure of all eyes as consumers crave for that better viewing experience. The Phablets market grew 105% to 44.1 million units in 2015.

At the same time, in the overall Smartphones shipments of 96.4 million units in 2015, Smartphones, with screen size of less than 5”, saw a decline of 5.6% in the same year to 52.3 million units.

Apple sensed this transition and so, in September 2014, it broke its small screen size tradition and launched iPhone 6 (4.7”) and iPhone 6 Plus (5.5).

Following this, Apple was overwhelmed as the pre-orders of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded four million within its first 24 hours of availability and more than ten million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices were sold in the first three days.

From 2014 to 2015, noticeable changes could be seen in the pattern of the top vendors too in the Phablets space, with Lenovo showing a stupendous performance. While Samsung retained its number 1 slot in 2014 and 2015, Lenovo grabbed the number 2 position in 2015, beating strong rivals such as Micromax, Karbonn, HTC and Lava.

The best selling model from Lenovo in the Phablets category was K3 Note, priced at Rs 9,999, and Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime 4G and Galaxy J7, priced at Rs 11,700 and Rs 14,999, respectively.

The falling prices of Phablets also contributed to its success and so going ahead can we expect Phablets cannibalizing the small-screen size Smartphones?
