Market grows 2% year-on-year, HP continues to be market leader
New Delhi / Gurgaon / Bangalore: The India A4 printer market comprising of Inkjet, DMP and Laser printers registered an 8% sequential decline in 1Q CY2015 over 4Q CY 2014. The market grew marginally by 2% on a year-on-year basis in 1Q CY2015. This was revealed in CMR’s India Monthly A4 Printer Market Review, 1Q CY2015 release.
Market Leadership
HP remained market leader with a 48% share in terms of unit shipments in 1Q CY2015. The vendor witnessed an 8% sequential decline in shipments in 1Q CY2015 vis-à-vis 4Q CY2014. Epson was placed at No. 2 spot, followed by Canon.
Samsung, witnessing a continuous decline in shipments since 1Q CY2014, turned around and recorded a 58% quarter-on-quarter growth in 1Q CY2015; Ricoh maintained shipments at the same level as the previous quarter.
“Traditionally the first quarter of a calendar year has an edge on the previous quarter’s shipments; however, this year the trend was reversed due to slow business by HP and Canon. In the Inkjet Single Function Printer category, both vendors witnessed shortage of product supply” said, Narinder Kumar, Analyst, Infotech and Channels Research Practices, CyberMedia Research.
“Upward price revision by HP in January 2015 affected the vendor’s business, especially in the Laser Single Function Printer category, which was another major reason for decline of the overall India A4 Printer market in 1Q CY2015.”
Leading Models
HP inkjet multifunction printer, Deskjet 1510 was the leading model in the India A4 printer market during 1Q CY2015, with a 10% share in terms of unit shipments followed by HP LaserJet multifunction printer model, M1005. The Canon LB2900B and Epson L210 were other leading printer models shipped in 1Q CY2015.
New Product Launches
The India A4 printer market is witnessing aggressive launch of new models since November 2014. Brother launched 10 new models by end of CY2014. Canon launched their Maxify series to especially target the enterprise segment. Panasonic launched three new models in 1Q CY2015.
“New launches in the India A4 printer segment will intensify competition. Vendors are harnessing the best of printing technologies and providing new features to consumers. The market is likely to witness more new launches in the coming quarters, offering better choice to potential buyers.” Narinder concluded.
Notes for Editors
- CyberMedia Research (CMR) is a pioneering market intelligence and consulting firm that runs a comprehensive quarterly market update on the India Printers market since 1998. CMR’s India Quarterly A4 Printer Market Review compares A4 printer shipments and price points for the Inkjet SFP, Inkjet MFP, Laser SFP, Laser MFP and DMP segments.
- CMR uses the term “shipments” to describe the number of Printers leaving the factory premises for OEM sales or stocking by distributors and retailers. For the convenience of media, the term shipment has been sometimes interchangeably replaced with ‘sales’ in the press release, but this reflects the market size in terms of units of Printers and not their absolute value. In the case of Printers imported into the country, it represents the number leaving the first warehouse to OEMs, distributors and retailers.
- CMR tracks shipments of Printers on a monthly basis. However, as per convention, the market size is reported on a calendar quarter basis; in all such cases this refers to an aggregated number for the three calendar months in the quarter to which the press release refers.
