India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (“MeitY”) has proposed another round of amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (“IT Rules”), marking a significant evolution in the country’s digital regulatory landscape.
These proposed changes, coming just weeks after the February 2026 amendments, tighten the framework around data preservation, expand the oversight reach of government committees, and crucially, make MeitY’s directions legally binding.

As of this morning, our sense is that it might get worse before it gets better in the region. None of the parties seem to feel they have lost leverage. None of them believe they can step back either. Companies have to continue looking at diversification, continuity and negotiation tactics to keep costs and supply chain disruptions to the minimum.
