Market Leadership

In the overall India Consumer Storage Flash Memory market, SanDisk was the most favored vendor with 30% market share in terms of units shipped in 1Q CY 2016. Samsung maintained number two spot. Strontium was at number three, witnessing 38% sequential growth in 1Q CY 2016.

“Growth in shipments of unbranded Micro SD cards was the leading reason for growth of the market in 1Q CY 2016 that recorded an impressive sequential growth of 61% in 1Q CY 2016,” stated Narinder Kumar, Lead Analyst, InfoTech and Channels Practices, CMR.

Capacity Trends

Suppliers of unbranded MicroSD cards in 1Q CY2016, focused extensively on shipments of 8 GB capacity segment due to which this capacity segment was leading contributor with 56% market share in terms of unit shipments.

“8 GB capacity segment Micro SD cards led to the mainstream growth in 1Q CY 2016, which contributed 84% market share in overall unbranded Micro SD cards and registered 114% sequential growth in 1Q CY2016. This temporarily deviated the market from its regular trend of market movement towards higher capacity segments,” Narinder further added.

Future Trends

“In CY 2016, Micro SD cards will be key growth driver for Consumer Storage Flash Memory Market. This category is likely to attain double-digit growth in CY 2016. Growth of 3G and 4G phones in India will be the key factor for the growth of Micro SD cards market this year. Apart from regular demand from feature phones, entry level smartphones with 4GB and 8GB inbuilt memory are expected to be key host devices for this growth as usable memory in smartphones is nearly half of inbuilt memory which becomes insufficient due to growing space needs. Entertainment, gaming and regular updates of apps creating demand for higher capacity storage will be sufficed by MicroSD Cards. In Tier-3 and beyond cities, 8GB Cards have become mainstream which is likely to motivate unbranded players for improved shipments in this capacity segment,” Narinder concluded.

Notes for Editors

  1. CyberMedia Research (CMR) is a pioneering market intelligence and consulting firm that runs a comprehensive quarterly market update on the India Consumer Storage market. CMR’s India Quarterly Consumer Storage Flash Memory Market Review covers Micro SD cards, SD cards and Flash drives sold via distributors and retail outlets. The report accounts for ‘legal’ shipments, but does not include bundled or ‘grey’ market shipments or units brought from abroad by individuals as a part of personal baggage.
  2. CMR uses the term “shipments” to describe the number of consumer storage flash memory devices leaving the factory premises for OEM sales or stocking by distributors and retailers. For the convenience of media, the term ‘shipment’ is sometimes replaced by “sales” in the press release, but this reflects the market size in terms of units of consumer storage flash memory devices and not their absolute value. In the case of flash memory devices imported into the country, it represents the number leaving the first warehouse to OEMs, distributors and retailers.
